Cape May Whale Watch & Research center

Where Is It? Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center cruises depart from South Jersey Marina — across from Lucky Bones.

Why Should I Go? Because you’re gaining access to a wide range of expertly crafted oceanic adventures all while supporting ongoing research and conservation efforts.

The breathtaking sights of the world’s largest mammals surfacing and breaching never get old. Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center was founded in 1987 as Cape May’s original eco-tour operation and things keep getting better every season.

In 2023, husband and wife duo, Captains Matt and Melissa, took ownership pledging to further the legacy of Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center and offer the most educational, family-friendly eco-tourism experience in the area.

Its emphasis on science, research, education and conservation makes them stand out, and you can take comfort in knowing they set an example for all other vessels on the water. They partner with Whale SENSE, a program which trains every captain and naturalist in responsible marine mammal viewing techniques.

Hop aboard the American Star and not only experience breathtaking wildlife sightings, but also take part in interactive hands-on learning activities like their touch tank. You'll get to hear from an onboard naturalist who will teach you all about the critters you see.

Dolphins are a common sight aboard this vessel and riders get an up-close viewing experiencing as they frolic right alongside the boat. Other possible sightings include Humpback whales, sea turtles, sting rays and sharks like Hammerheads and Spinners. Every trip is different!

There's a variety of trips to choose from to get the most out of your excursion. Embark on a sunset cruise and end your day with magnificent views during golden hour. You can also host your next private event on the American Star! It's a perfect venue for birthday parties, field trips and fundraising events.
