East Lynne Theater Company

About the Theater Company: East Lynne Theater Company is in residence at Cape May Presbyterian Church, on the corner of Hughes and Decatur.

Why Should I Go? East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC) is a nonprofit theater dedicated to promoting, reimagining, and producing entertaining and thought-provoking American theater for residents and visitors of Cape May. Founded in 1980, ELTC is the first professional Equity theater in the United States whose mission is to spotlight classic American literature and history.

Since its founding, ELTC has been widely recognized for its artistic excellence and cultural significance by such organizations as The Wall Street Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY/Public Broadcasting, and The New York Times (which named ELTC one of the top 75 summer theaters in North America). In 2018, the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly passed a joint legislative resolution recognizing ELTC as “one of the State’s most important cultural treasures.”

Over the past 43 years, the theater company has presented nearly 190 plays by award-winning playwrights including Eugene O’Neill, Thornton Wilder and George S. Kaufman. ELTC has also commissioned or adapted over 50 new plays that draw on classic literature or historical themes, including “Huckleberry Finn,” “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and “The Mark of Zorro.” ELTC has played quite a role in bringing new theater to Cape May, introducing roughly 20 plays previously produced in New York City and in other cities across the nation.

ELTC’s efforts don’t stop at its mainstage productions. It is extremely active in the community with a booth at outdoor festivals and farmers markets in West Cape May throughout the year. ELTC also offers a variety of programs that build community through the art of theater including a partnership with Cape May MAC. ELTC’s involvement in their annual Sherlock Holmes Weekends and holiday Ghosts of Christmas Past trolley rides are attractions locals and visitors look forward to each year in Cape May.
